65 The ancient Tao cultivators, Did not lead people to acquire knowledge to be tricky, But to guide them to restore their simplicity and innocence. The reason people are difficult to be governed is because they are clever and witty. Therefore, he who rules a nation with tactics and wits shall do harm to the country. He who does not rule with such is the nation’s blessing. To know these two principles is to know the rule of nature. To know the rule of nature is called Mystic Te (Mystic Virtue). Mystic Te is profound and far-reaching. It can guide all things to return to their original nature, And thus great harmony can be achieved.
